As a Vet Rep, there’s a lot of help and assistance you can provide to your job seeker clients. One of your valued roles is to get good information in the hands of people who need it. Here are some factoids of interest:
Here is a copy of a letter from a Vet Rep, Larry Woods, Jacksonville office of the NC Employment Security Commission, that shares a wonderful outcome for a Vet:
The veterans section of the N.C. Employment Security Commission's Jacksonville office serves about 2,100 veterans per year. This group of veterans is truly representative of the total population in regard to social-economic status, ethnicity, gender, skill level, education and training, and social need.
It is with great joy that we serve these highly deserving persons, but with heavy hearts when we are unable to directly or indirectly assist them in overcoming their challenges or meet their immediate and future needs…..Recently, we attempted to assist a local Veteran with both blindness and volatile diabetes.
After many attempts to gain assistance through local veterans' organizations and social service agencies, a private company stepped up to the plate to provide direct assistance to this veteran in need.
This letter is to publicly acknowledge the organizations and persons responsible for giving of their professional and personal time to better the quality of life for our local veteran; specifically, Kelley Hamilton, disabled veteran outreach specialist of ESC for facilitating and coordinating the efforts of Donna Kyle, owner-operator, and Mary Parker of the Jacksonville business Merry Maids.
These three individuals assisted our local veteran by cleaning his residence at no charge, improving the safety and health conditions within his residence.
All three deserve special recognition from the veterans of our community for their caring and for unselfishly giving of themselves.
Larry Woods

Newsletter note: Sometimes its not always about jobs….. Thanks Larry!
Job Fairs can be very productive time spent by a job seeker, enabling a person to meet representatives of up to a dozen or more companies in a few hours. But the time is most productive when a job seeker can provide the information essential to the recruiter to determine next steps. Some thoughts:
A company representative sorts resumes into three piles: follow-up, maybe and no interest. To get to the follow-up pile, a job seeker must:
-Do research on the company and know what potential roles they have to offer
-Do a presentation of skills and aptitudes relevant to the potential needs of a company
-Ask what the company is looking for related to the career area of interest
-Close with a statement of genuine interest in the company as a potential employer
Job seekers who seem uninformed or just “shopping” tend to end in the “no interest” resume pile. Coach your job seeker clients for job fairs and help them get to the right pile!
