Job market talking points

So far, so good.   Late last year, the consensus of economists was that job growth for 2007 would be about 1 million+ jobs for the year, much less than the 2.2 million jobs added in 2006.  For the first three months of the year, there have been about 455,000+ jobs added, on track to exceed the growth forecast.  Each month of job growth takes the US economy to new records of total employment as well.  But the growth will also be uneven, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  For 2007, the BLS expects jobs to be added in service businesses and either no growth or declines in employment in manufacturing and construction.

On a positive note, a recent survey by Careerbuilder and USA Today of 9400+ HR and hiring Managers reported hiring plans for the second quarter:

So eight out of ten companies are hiring!

Connecting with employers

A recent survey by Career Crossroads of hiring activity is most helpful in finding out what works for job seekers.  The study focused on sources of hires for employers. There were 22 company participants with 1.2 million employees and 188,000+ hires for 2006.  For the year, 33% of positions were filled within the companies through transfers and promotions.  Sources of hires for 120,000+ jobs filled from outside the companies were:

-Referrals (employee, other): 25.6%

-Company websites: 20.7%

-Job boards: 12.3%

-Print media: 6.9%

-Direct sourcing: 6.4%

-Re-hires: 5.2%

-3rd party agencies: 4.8%

-College: 3.8%

-Career fairs: 2.7%

-Temp to hire: 2.3%

All other sources: 9%+
