"Curiouser and curiouser" may be the best way to describe the recent effort of the BLS to reconcile the differences between the monthly Payroll survey and the Household surveys. If you have been following the monthly reporting, over the past few years the Household surveys have reported a greater rate of employment than the Payroll reports. The US Household surveys report 3 million more jobs than the Payroll surveys. In September, the BLS adjusted the Payroll report upward by 810,000 jobs to partially reconcile the differences, and we have to assume further adjustments are probable. One observation offered is that up to 400-500,000 people may be earning a living through trading activity on eBay. Conclusion? Whichever survey is more accurate, there’s a whole lot of employment out there! Hope you are having success with assisting your clients!

Employers are finding the job market increasingly more difficult to operate in for staffing goals. Recently, a search firm was retained to conduct an assignment for an Intellectual Property Paralegal with background of three or more years in trademark, copyright and licensing assignments. The position offered a base salary of mid-$60,000 range. When an employer is paying retainer fees for difficult jobs at this level, it is an indicator of the growing shortages of workers, which is good news for job seekers!
