Job Seekers Newsletter

June 2008

Welcome Everyone!

The job market at mid-year continues to indicate a slower growth period for jobs. We wish you the best of success for your job search! Our site and resources, plus the leadership of the job support groups, are here to help.

Comments About the U.S. Job Market

Comments From survey resources:

Execunet recruiter confidence survey climbed to a 10-month high in May, as the pace of hiring at the top of the employment market continues to improve the outlook for the executive search industry despite significant economic headwinds. According to May's survey of 114 executive recruiters, 66% are confident or very confident the executive employment market will improve during the next 6 months - up from 61% last month. During this period of time, 80% of executive recruiters expect at least a 10-percent increase in search assignments received from corporate clients.

The Spherion Employee Confidence Index rose 0.7 points to 46.9 in May, showing the first increase in 9 months. The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reflects workers' increasing confidence in the economy, as more workers report that the economy is getting stronger in May.

Seventy-five percent say it is unlikely they will lose their job in the next 12 months, a decline of 3 percentage points from the prior month. Sixty-four percent said they are confident in the future of their current employer, while just over half (51 percent) express confidence in their ability to find a new job. Both indicators dropped one percentage point from April.

The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series™ report for May 2008, states there were 3,795,400 online advertised job vacancies, a decline of 579,000 or 13.2 percent from the May 2007 level. This is the third consecutive month of declines for the nation as a whole (year-over-year).

Brian Wesbury, an economist, forecast growth in the US economy for the last six months of 2008 will annualize at 3.0% to 3.5%, which is a level of growth that normally produces about 2 million new jobs over a 12 month period.

Comment: The "rear view mirror" data on employee perceptions and job postings is helpful. The expectations of Recruiters and an Economist for the next six months is good news for employees and job seekers!

As we have noted in previous newsletters, 2008 is the so far, so good year for jobs!

Quote of the Month

"We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

James Madison

A Prayer While You Are In Transition

The will of God for your life is simply that you submit yourself to Him each day and say, "Father, Your will for today is mine. Your pleasure for today is mine. Your work for today is mine. I trust You to be God. You lead me today and I will follow."

- Kay Arthur
