Job Seekers Newsletter

July 2008

Welcome Everyone!

The job market at mid-year continues to indicate a slower growth period for jobs. We wish you the best of success for your job search! Our site and resources, plus the leadership of the job support groups, are here to help.

Comments About the U.S. Job Market

Comments From survey resources:

CIO Insight’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data findings are that the size of the IT workforce in the United States has topped 4 million workers for the first time last quarter. And the number of employed IT pros reached 3,956,000 in the second quarter of 2008, also a record high. The IT unemployment rate inched up one-tenth of a percentage point last quarter to 2.3 percent, but still hovers near historic lows.

Spherion Survey Shows Decrease in Overall Employee Confidence

  • Sixty-three Percent of Workers Express Confidence in the Future of Their Current Employer (down 1%)
  • Seventy-six Percent of Workers Feel it is Unlikely They will Lose Their Jobs
  • Slightly Fewer Workers are Likely to Look for a Job in the Next Year (34% versus 35%)

TheLadders Quarterly Executive Job Market Trends Report for the second quarter, 2008: 71% of $100,000+ job seekers said they have noticed a slow-down this quarter. However, undeterred by the economic slow-down, 58% of those surveyed described the high-end job markets in their cities as stable and 59% said they expect to land a new job in six months or less. There were 12,000 more $100,000+ jobs posted on TheLadders in the first quarter of 2008 than there were in the first quarter of 2007.

Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor, at the end of Amy 2008 there were 3.6 million job openings in the US. This is down from 4.0 million jobs one year ago.

In a TV business news program this week, Brian Wesbury, an economist, forecast growth in the US economy for the last six months of 2008 will annualize at 3.0% to 3.5%, which is a level of growth that normally produces about 2 million new jobs over a 12 month period.

About the cost of fuel....

Survey Says
According to the latest CareerBuilder.com survey of more than 8,700 workers nationwide, the impact of escalating fuel costs has taken its toll on American commuters. Of the 89 percent of workers, who said they drive to work, nearly half (47 percent) reported they had to give up something in order to afford the gas needed for their commute.

-- 35% ate out less
-- 31% spent less money on entertainment
-- 27% bought less expensive groceries
-- 24% went shopping for clothes less
-- 21% did not go on vacation
-- 11% eliminated cable, magazine subscriptions, etc.
-- 9% did not attend a function where they would be expected to bring a gift
-- 4% cut back on their child's extracurricular activities.

Comment: The general impression from various sources about the job market suggest that the current slowdown is bottoming out and the next six months should see overall gains in job growth. As we have noted in previous newsletters, 2008 is the so far, so good year for jobs!

A Prayer While You Are In Transition

The will of God for your life is simply that you submit yourself to Him each day and say, "Father, Your will for today is mine. Your pleasure for today is mine. Your work for today is mine. I trust You to be God. You lead me today and I will follow."
