Comments About the U.S. Job Market

The Conference Board conducts a broad range of studies of the US economy. One of its measures is online advertising volume as an indicator of the state of the job market. Some key findings of online job posts are:

  • Over the past 12 months, online job posts rose 24%
  • There were 4.3 million unduplicated job posts online for the month of April, an increase of 610,000 jobs versus March
  • Over 426,000 job posts were for management positions
  • The fastest year-over-year growth was in the mid-section of the country with the West South Central and West North Central regions up 41 percent and 35 percent, respectively. The slowest growth was in New England, up 6 percent.
  • Two of the nation's largest metropolitan areas, New York and Los Angeles, were first and second in the absolute volume of advertised job vacancies in April, with 321,000 and 262,500, respectively.
  • Metropolitan areas with very strong growth in job posts were San Jose and San Francisco, followed by Austin and Washington D.C.

The job post volume on job boards offers insight into the job market going forward. While the economy seems to suggest that the past six months have been slower than one year ago, the job post indicator suggests that the job market continues to be healthy over the next three to six months, perhaps to the end of 2007.

Manpower Survey

Employers in the U.S. plan to slow hiring activity during the second quarter of 2007, according to a Manpower Inc. survey. The seasonally adjusted survey results show that employers are more likely to maintain or reduce staff levels than ramp up hiring. Of the 14,000 U.S. employers surveyed, 28 percent expect to increase payrolls during the second quarter of 2007, while 7 percent expect to trim staff levels and 59 percent expect no change in hiring. Six percent are undecided about their hiring plans.

To summarize the findings:

  • 28% plan to increase staff
  • 7% plan to decrease staff
  • 59% plan to continue to replace staff, not expand
  • 6% are unsure of plans

So up to eight out of ten companies are hiring!

Networking Tip Of The Month

Job seekers attending networking groups use various tools to help their process, such as resumes, broadcast sheets and business cards. Business cards are very useful for providing other networkers with the Cliff notes version of what you do plus your contact information. A card should contain two or three ways to contact you (email, cell, landline) plus three or four skill sets that reflect what you do. Some examples that illustrate the point, but will need your editing for use:

  • Marketing: Product management, new product launch, market share growth
  • Sales: Business development, account management, sales growth
  • Operations: Order fulfillment, customer satisfaction, cost containment
  • Customer service: Productivity , customer satisfaction, account retention
  • Production: meet goals for quality, productivity, customer needs
  • Administration: Support of management, communications, data management
  • Accounting/Finance: Financial reporting, forecasting, compliance

A business card helps people to recall a few key things about you and pass information along that will assist your search. Make it easy for people to help you with the Cliff notes version of your background!

Quote of the Month

“God hasn’t promised us tomorrow, but He has promised us eternity.” —Tony Snow, Press Secretary, White House and cancer survivor.

A Prayer While You Are In Transition

The will of God for your life is simply that you submit yourself to Him each day and say, "Father, Your will for today is mine. Your pleasure for today is mine. Your work for today is mine. I trust You to be God. You lead me today and I will follow."

- Kay Arthur
