Survey Says: Here is a summary of findings on hiring plans for 2008, based upon a study by Jobfox.com and reported by Onrec.com, providing insights into the coming job market. The survey findings were based upon views of 250 recruiters in a broad range of industries located in major regional job markets of Boston, Atlanta, Washington DC and San Francisco.
"Recruiting activities must continue to expand because top candidates - those with high-level skills - are instrumental to creating sustainable competitive advantages," said Rob McGovern, the CEO of Jobfox. "Top talent is even more critical in a down economy."
"The exit of the Baby Boomers from the workplace continues to put pressure on companies to rethink recruiting strategies for 2008 and beyond," said McGovern, the creator of CareerBuilder and now the founder of Jobfox. Jobfox combines precision skills matching and professional branding to more efficiently link already-employed candidates with new job opportunities.
Some key findings of the study:
- 56% of recruiters report that hiring activity will increase in 2008
- 69% of recruiters report that over 90% of resumes they receive are not qualified note: Recruiters are seeking alternate methods of connecting with candidates
- 37% of recruiters are contacting retirees about job opportunities or plan to do so in 2008
- 22% of recruiters are focusing on stay at home moms and dads for new employees
- " The advanced professional - especially if they have proven management and communication skills - will remain in the driver's seat in 2008," McGovern said.
Factoids about the economy: (per Larry Kudlow, economist and author)
- Economy is in its 74th month of growth, 17 months more than the average (57 months)
- Pay is up 3.8% over the past year, 1% above inflation, so real wages are up
- Total compensation (pay plus benefits) is up 3.3% after inflation, the best performance in seven years (per University of Michigan Professor Mark Perry)
- According to Prof. Perry, household wealth has increased 43 percent in just the past five years, despite $100 oil, $3 gas, and the sub-prime infection
- The current unemployment rate of 4.7% is better than any year of the 1990’s when the average rate was 5.2%
- “U.S. productivity surged 6.3 percent in the third quarter, its best pace in four years. A big rise in output per person is good for profits, growth, and low inflation

Pay me the money: A recent survey of employers by Robert Half and Careerbuilder shared the following:
- Fifty-seven percent of hiring managers polled for the project said it was difficult to find qualified candidates 12 months ago; 91 percent said recruiting is equally or more challenging today.
- More than half (52 percent) of hiring managers who are having trouble recruiting cited a shortage of qualified professionals.
- 58 percent of workers polled said they are more likely to negotiate a better compensation package today than 12 months ago - double the number from last year's poll.
As a candidate seeking a job offer in a climate of shortages, the key accomplishments to focus upon for the best job offer are:
- Understand the company needs in depth- get good information on what they are looking for and where they are going
- Position your background in relation to the needs and the future goal state, connecting "multiple dots" between your accomplishments and the goals
- Demonstrate how you have added value in one or two prior assignments that parallel the next steps they are planning
Once you establish your value, the price of your services can be negotiated. It's all about the value you bring to the position and the company!
