Every job search is personal. If you are intent upon a job change, there are two considerations for your search:
- How do people find jobs today?
- What's the best plan for job search?
Start your job search process with an understanding of how employers find people, then develop a plan to get to your career goals.
How Employers Find People
Survey of Sources of Hires, 2006
In a survey of 22 large employers, (1.2 million employees) the top three sources of hires were:
- Referrals (employee, other) 25.6%
- Company websites 20.7%
- Job boards 12.3%
Employers are filling over half their jobs from Referrals and the internet. The "Referrals" includes thousands of job seekers successfully networking into their target companies for interviews and hires.

Preparation
Review our resources and links page for resume, broadcast sheet, elevator speech and any other tools needed, develop the best presentation of your talents.
Planning
Since Referrals are the largest single source of hires for Employers, the first priority of a job search plan is a weekly commitment of time to participate in Networking meetings. Attend Networking meetings and share the following with participants:
- Your target industries and companies
- Types of opportunities that match your interests
- Types of contacts and introductions to target companies for current job posts you need for your search
- Contacts and ideas to help others for mutual support
Once the Networking time is defined, add all the other activities to the weekly plan and get started! Visit our site content for more help.
Performance
Take whatever time it takes to prepare for Network events, job fairs, phone interviews and onsite interviews to effectively present your talents. Bring your A Game!
